The charts illustrate the number of Japanese tourists travelling overseas between 1985 and 1995, along with Australia’s share of the Japanese tourist market during the same period.
Overall, it is clear that the number of Japanese people travelling abroad increased steadily over the decade. At the same time, Australia’s share of this market rose significantly, despite a slight decline around the middle of the period.
In 1985, approximately 4.5 million Japanese tourists travelled overseas, which was the lowest figure recorded. From that point onwards, the number increased every year, rising by roughly one million annually. There were no notable decreases throughout the period, and by 1995 the total had grown to around 16 million tourists.
Similarly, Australia experienced substantial growth in its share of Japanese visitors. In 1985, Australia accounted for about 2% of the market, which climbed to roughly 4.5% by 1989. This was followed by a small drop to nearly 4% in 1990. However, from 1991 onwards, Australia’s market share increased gradually, reaching approximately 6% by 1995.
