Japan had the highest proportion of employed men in both years, although it decreased from 80% in 1970 to 70% in 2000. Belgium had the lowest male employment, falling from 50% to 40%. The decline in male employment was most pronounced in Belgium compared to the other countries.
Women’s employment was generally lower than men’s. Japan had the highest female employment, increasing slightly from 30% in 1970 to 33% in 2000. Belgium consistently had the lowest female employment at around 10%. In Australia and the USA, women’s employment rose moderately, by approximately 1-2 percentage points over the period.
