The charts illustrate the proportion of people in the 23 – 65 age group in different jobs in Ashby and in the UK as a whole in 2008.
At first glance, it is clear that people in the UK preferred to work in an office whilst personal service was the most common job in Ashby. Additionally, the unemployment rate in this town was higher than that of the whole country.
Looking first at the largest components, personal service accounted for the largest share, more than one-fifth of total occupations in Ashby, which was 4% higher than that of the UK. Conversely, office work held the largest portion in the UK, at 19%, which was slightly higher than the figure in Ashby by 1%. A similar pattern occurred in the portions of shop work in both regions, at 14% in Ashby and 13% in the UK.
Regarding the remaining categories, only 8% of the local citizens had a technical occupation, which was nearly half of the national figure, at 17%. Furthermore, in the UK, professional jobs were more prevalent, compared to Ashby. On the other hand, the portions of people working in construction and the unemployed in the country accounted for 10%, which were 6% and 4% lower than those of the town, respectively.
