Given are two charts provide the differences between the ratios of using public transport and using private cars in five Australian cities, ranging from 2000 to 2010.
Overall, the percentage of people using public transport is lower than that of using private cars in all the cities. Namely, the former’s average is about 15%, the latter’s is about 50%. For statics data of public transport, Adelaide holds the lowest percentage, which is around 5% during the entire period. While for private car usage, Adelaide stands in the highest position of above 70% in this decade.
More detailed, the percentage of mass transit usage in Adelaide and Perth remains stable this time, respectively near 5% and 10%. Brisbane rapidly rose from 2002 to 2010 and reached a peak in 2010, its number has grown nearly twice, from 15% to almost 30%. Sydney kept a stable trend till 2007, then came a sharp increase till 2009, and finally stayed at nearly 25%.
In the aspect of private car usage rate, Brisbane and Perth had a slight fluctuant during the whole period. And Melbourne remained unchanged before 2002, then came a dip but soon increased to the original level of 30%, but ultimately dropped to 20%. Sydney rose first and reached a peak in 2006, which was above 40%, then decreased to 30% in 2010.
