The line graphs compare the usage of public transport and private cars in five cities in Australia over a decade, starting in 2000.
Overall, it is evident that private cars were more popular than public transportation across all five cities, with a slight upward trend in their usage during this period. Additionally, while Sydney residents utilized a significant amount of both types of vehicles, Adelaide exhibited a relatively low figure.
Regarding public transport usage, 20% of Sydney residents used public transport at the beginning of the decade, which was marginally higher than Melbourne’s figure of just under a fifth. In the final year, Sydney’s percentage increased to nearly a quarter. In contrast, Melbourne, Perth, and Brisbane saw minimal fluctuations, maintaining a range of 10% to 15% over the ten years. Adelaide’s percentage remained unchanged at about 10%.
In terms of private car usage, this mode of transport was the preferred choice for Sydney residents once again. The percentage of private car usage in Sydney stood at around 80%, followed closely by Melbourne at 75% and Perth at 70%, all of which saw an increase of about 10% by 2010. Conversely, Brisbane (65%) and Adelaide (60%) experienced a decline of 10% before subsequently recovering.
