The two pie charts illustrate the proportion of volunteers involved in five different types of organisations in 2008 and 2014. Overall, while Educational and Environmental volunteering consistently attracted significant participation, notable changes occurred in other categories over the period.
In 2008, Educational organisations accounted for the highest share of volunteers, at 24%. This was followed by Environmental groups, attracting 21%, and Art organisations, at 18%. Sport and Other categories each comprised 15%, while Health Care had the smallest proportion, at just 7%.
By 2014, however, priorities had shifted. Environmental organisations saw a substantial increase to 29%, becoming the most popular sector. Volunteering in Educational organisations declined moderately to 17%. Meanwhile, the proportion of people engaged in Sport rose to 25%, overtaking Art, which fell significantly to 12%. Health Care experienced a small increase to 8%, while the percentage of volunteers in Other categories declined sharply to only 9%.
In summary, the data reveal a growing interest in Environmental and Sport-related volunteering between 2008 and 2014, while participation in Art and Other categories dropped noticeably. This suggests evolving societal priorities, perhaps influenced by heightened environmental awareness and the rising popularity of sports activities.
