The charts show how water is used in six different regions of the world. Water is used for three main purposes: agriculture, industry, and homes.
In most regions, the biggest amount of water is used for farming. For instance, in Africa and Central Asia, about 84-88% of water goes to agriculture. South America and South East Asia also use a lot of water for farming, more than 70%.
However, in North America and Europe, water is used more for industry. In Europe, 53% of water is used by factories, and in North America, it is 48%. These regions use less water for farming compared to other areas.
Domestic use of water (for drinking, cooking, and cleaning) is the smallest in most regions. It is highest in South America (19%) and South East Asia (12%). In Central Asia, Africa, and North America, only about 7-10% of water is used for homes.
Overall, agricultural use is the highest in most regions, except in North America and Europe, where industry takes more water.
