The charts compare how university students allocated their budgets among seven different categories of needs over a decade. The units are measured in percentage.
Overall, the proportion of expenditure on utilities, dining out, and transportation increased from 2000 to 2010, while spending on clothing experienced a significant decline. The other categories of spending remained stable.
In 2000, 29% of an average university student’s budget was spent on food and drink, and this figure did not change over the next decade. Similarly, expenditure on holidays and sports and culture leveled off at around 5% and 17%, respectively.
Clothing accounted for 16% of spending in 2000, but it dramatically declined by 11% by 2010. Meanwhile, spending on dining out and utilities increased by about 5 percentage points, and transportation saw a modest increase of just 1%.
