The pie charts compare the proportions of consumer expenditure across seven sectors in 2009 and 2019.
Overall, food and drink accounted for the largest share of spending in both years, although its proportion declined slightly. By contrast, entertainment and smartphone-related expenditure increased noticeably, while transport and books experienced significant decreases.
Spending on food and furniture remained relatively stable over the period, falling marginally by around three and two percentage points respectively. However, there was a marked contrast between smartphones and books. Expenditure on smartphones rose sharply from 2% in 2009 to 10% in 2019, whereas spending on books dropped dramatically from 6% to just 1%, indicating a clear shift in consumer behaviour.
A similar pattern was observed for transport and entertainment. While transport expenditure declined substantially from 22% to 12%, spending on entertainment increased significantly, rising from 8% to 19%, which represented the largest growth among all categories.
