The charts compare the percentage of men and women who held driving license from over thirty-year period, at the same time it also show the proportion of young drivers aged 17 – 20 in 1996 and 2006. Overall, although men remained at higher proportions in terms of driving license ownership, women also expreinced a considerable increase and gap between both sexes narrowed. Meanwhile, the share for young drivers dropped in 1996 and 2006.
In detail, in 1996, about 70% of men had licenses compared with only 30% of women. The period from 1991 to 2001, marked the largest growth for women from 44% to 53%.This percentage had increased steadily for both sexes reaching the maximum of 80% for men and 60% for women by 2006.
In comparison to percentage of license holders, the share for young drivers fell in span of 10 years. The initial proportions for both sexes under the age of 20 were at 50% and 30% while in the second year of 2006, both genders’ segments almost fell by 5 and 10 percentages, with men 45%.
