The pie charts illustrate the percentage of primary means of transportation used by individuals to travel to a university in 2004 and 2009.
Overall, while the proportion of car users dropped, the share of bus rose. Moreover these both means of transport stood out as significantly more popular than the others.
In 2004, the highest proportion of university commuters relied on cars, accounting for 51% of all journeys. However, this figure witnessed a dramatic fall, dropping by almost half to 28% in 2009. In contrast, the proportion of people travelling by bus increased from 20% in 2004 to 35% in 2009, showing a notable rise in popularity.
The remaining modes of transport accounted for a much smaller proportion of journeys, with bicycles, trains, and walking making up only 9%, 3%, and 4% respectively. All these figures witnessed steady growth, reaching 16%, 4%, and 6% in the second period.
