The charts given compare five different types of transport of people travelling to university in two years, 2004 and 2009
Look at the illustration, it is immediately evident that bus, bicycle, walking and train increased proportion of methods of transport, whereas the opposite was true for car. Additionally train was consistently the sector with the lowest the transport of people travelling to university overall
In 2004, travelling by car was the most popular method, accounting for 51% of people. However, this figure decreased significantly to 28% in 2009. In contrast, the proportion of people using bus increased considerably from 33% in 2004 to 46% in 2009, making it the most common mode of transport.
Regarding the other methods, all of them saw increases over the period. The percentage of people travelling by bicycle rose from 9% to 16%. Similarly, walking increased slightly from 4% to 6%. Train remained the least popular method, although its figure increased marginally from 3% in 2004 to 4% in 2009.
