Overall, action films were the most popular genre among men and also produced the largest share of ticket sales, whereas women showed a preference for romantic comedies. Despite these differences in viewing preferences, action and comedy films made up most of the box-office revenue.
In terms of preferences, about 40% of men preferred action movies, compared with around 25% of women. Comedy was the second most popular genre for both groups, attracting about 20% of viewers among men and women alike. Romantic comedies, however, were much more popular among women, accounting for around 30% of their choices, while only about 5% of men selected this genre. Thriller, science fiction and western films were less popular overall, each attracting around 10% or fewer viewers, with science fiction being the least popular genre among women.
Turning to box-office revenue, action films led ticket sales, making up nearly half of total earnings. Comedy accounted for just under a quarter of revenue, while romantic comedies generated around 12%. Thriller and other film types together represented only a small share of total box-office takings
