Overall, further education was the most popular among school leavers at the beginning of the period, while it was overtaken by employment by the end of the period. By contrast, unemployment was the least common among school graduates throughout the period. Additionally, further education and unemployment experienced a moderate drop over the given years, whereas the opposite was true for employment.
Starting with the largest category, the percentage of school leavers enrolling in university stood at 50% in 1980. Firstly, it went down gradually to 38% in 1990, after which, there was a slight fall in the figure, reducing to 37% in 2000.
Regarding the second category, 40% of school graduates were employed in 1980. This increased significantly to 55% in 2000.
Turning to the other one, the proportion of school leavers started at 10% in 1980. Despite having a low rise to 12% in 1990, the figure decreased slightly to 8% in 2000.
