The pie charts illustrate three different choices of Australian students after completing secondary school in 1980, 1990, and 2000.
Overall, while the proportion of school leavers entering the workforce saw a significant increase, the opposite was true for both the figures of other categories. Additionally, unemployment accounted for the lowest percentage throughout the period shown.
In terms of employment, this category became the predominant choice by the end of the period. Starting at 40% in 1980, this figure climbed to exactly half in 1990, then reached a peak of 55% in the last year. In contrast, although further education was the most popular option in the first year, at 50%, its figure witnessed a gradual decline to 37% in 2000. Finally, the percentages of the unemployed group were consistently the lowest. In detail, in 1980, 10% of secondary-school graduates experienced unemployment. This proportion increased slightly by 2% in 1990 before dropping to its lowest point of 8% in 2000.
