The diagram shows the life cycle of a frog. Overall, the cycle which comprises four main stages take place in different aquatic environments, and the cycle can take up almost 4.5 years to finish, in which an egg transforms into an adult frog.
A frog begins life as an egg which is laid in large numbers protected by a jelly-like coating in still, shallow waters such as ponds and lakes. The eggs take between 6 and 21 days to hatch into tadpole. In this stage, tadpole which feeds on algae and small plants, moves like a fish. This stage takes up to nine weeks, during which tadlope develop legs.
In the third stage which lasts approximately 12 weeks, the tadlope turns into a froglet, which can jump. In this stage, the froglet feeds on algae and small plants and develops lungs which makes it able to breathe out of water. The froglet changes into an adult frog in the last stage, in which the frog feeds on insects and small animals. This stage lasts for between two and four years before the frog returns to still and shallow waters to lay the eggs of the next generation.
