Overall, the population in urban areas increased a lot during the period, while the population in rural areas decreased. In both urban and rural areas, children made up the largest percentage, whereas elderly people had the smallest proportion.
In 2010, the urban population was 2,500 million, compared with 3,100 million in rural areas. The figure for urban areas then rose to 4,300 million in 2020 and 8,900 million in 2030. It reached 9,200 million in 2040. On the other hand, the rural population fell slightly from 3,100 million in 2010 to 3,050 million in 2020 and 2,890 million in 2030. After that, it dropped significantly to only 890 million in 2040.
Looking at the pie charts, children were the largest group in both areas, accounting for 39% in urban areas and 43% in rural areas. Women represented 23% of the urban population and 26% of the rural population. Men made up 23% in urban areas but only 19% in rural areas. Finally, elderly people accounted for 15% and 12% in urban and rural areas respectively.
