The diagram map illustrates the transformation that occurred at Queen Mary’s Hospital since its establishment in 1960.
Overall, the massive changes have occurred over the first 20-year period gaps. It is also noticeable that the area of the hospital has not changed over time, while most of the areas around it have transformed into new establishments, or have changed their lot area.
In 1960, four properties of equal sizes can be seen in the map, comprising a hospital, a shopping centre, a farmland, and a car park. The hospital is located in front of the main road, on the right while the car park is situated behind it. Whereas, the shopping center is positioned adjacent to the hospital on the left side of the main road, with the farmland at the rear side of it. Both the farmland and shopping centre was removed and replaced with new infrastructures after 20 years.
In 1980, facilities related to the hospital were constructed, a pharmacy and cancer center replaced the shopping centre’s area beside the hospital, while a nursing school was established in place of the farmland. Twenty years later, in the 2000s, all of these buildings were still standing; however, significant changes have occurred. The lot area of the cancer centre had been expanded, and it took the whole nursing school’s former space. Consequently, the nursing school was relocated, occupying over half of the car park’s original area.
To conclude, the illustration provides clearly and comprehensively, the interesting changes in the facilities around Queen Mary Hospital every 20 years from 1960-2000.
