The charts illustrate the expenditure that British parents put on children’s sports as well as compare the number of children taking part in three types of sports between 2008 and 2014.
Overall, the spending on children’s sports experienced a gradual increase over the researched period. Additionally, although the number of children playing three types of sports increased and football was still the most popular sports among young participants.
According to the first chart, the expenditure on children’s sports initially stood at 20 pounds in 2008. After that, the figure rose by more than 10 pounds, standing at approximately 31 pounds in the years 2008-2014.
Observing the second chart, in 2008, the number of children taking part in football was highest, at around 8 millions. Whereas, the figure of swimming and athletics were much lower, standing 2.3 and 0.3 million respectively. From that point on, football observed a small decline in the number of young participants in the years 2008 and 2010, and then showed a recovery to 8.5 million in 2014. Similarly, swimming registered a nearly 1.3 climb during the whole period. Finally, after remaining unchanged between 2008 and 2010, the number of children participating in athletics remarkably grew to 5 million in 2012, and then showed a small decline in 2014.
