The first line graph illustrates how many passengers traveled by train between 2000 to 2009, while the second one shows the proportion of trains that are punctual compared with the target.
Overall, the number of train travelers increased gradually over the years with the figure of 2005 being the highest. Furthermore, the rate of punctual trains increased throughout the period.
Looking first at the train passengers, it stood at around 39 million people in 2000. Thereafter, the number of rail passengers fluctuated until it reached a peak at almost 50 million in 2005, although the figure then dropped back down to 40 million in 2008, before rising to around 42 million at the end of the period.
Moving on the punctual trains, the rates of trains which ran on time in the year 2000 was 92%, compared to the expected targets of 95%. The proportion of trains increased to 96% in 2004, after which this figure witnessed a considerable decline to 92% in 2006. Finally, these punctual trains quickly increased up to 97% by 2008, and then maintained the level in 2009.
