The line graphs illustrate the changing patterns of birth and death rates, indicated in thousands, in New Zealand between 1901 and the projected year 2101. Overall, it is evident from the graphs that there was a similar and contrasting pattern between birth and death rates over the period.
In detail, at the beginning of the period, the proportion of birth rates in New Zealand was higher than the death rate, at 20,000, accounting for twice as much as its death rate, at 10,000 in 1901. Over the next sixty years, it climbed significantly to reach a peak of around 65,000. With the exception of a decline, at 50,000 in-between 1981 and 2001, the figure for birth rates fell steadily to constitute just above 40,000 in 2101.
In comparison, the death rates in New Zealand increased steadily, from just 10,000 in 1901 to almost 30,000 in 2001, including a slight rise in 1921. From 2001 to the upcoming year 2061, the trend climbed gradually to reach a peak of just under 60,000, remaining the same until 2101.
It can be understood that each graph experienced corresponding rises from 1901 to 2041. However, the contrasting pattern in birth and death rates occurred from 2041 to upcoming 2101, during which birth rates went down moderately, and death rates went up significantly.
