The bar chart illustrates the percentages of children in three age groups (1–3 years, 4–5 years, and 6–8 years) who engage in five common bedtime activities in the United States.
Overall, reading and brushing teeth are the most popular activities across all age groups, while eating before bed is the least common. There are also noticeable differences in preferences between younger and older children.
Looking first at reading, it is the most frequent activity among children aged 4–5 years, with approximately 70% participating, compared to about 60% of 6–8-year-olds and 50% of 1–3-year-olds. Brushing teeth is similarly widespread, with participation rates exceeding 60% across all age groups, although slightly lower among 1–3-year-olds.
In contrast, the proportion of children having a bath decreases with age. Around 60% of 1–3-year-olds take baths as part of their routine, compared to just over 40% of 4–5-year-olds and under 30% of 6–8-year-olds. Watching TV and eating are the least common activities overall, with participation rates below 20% for all age groups.
