The line chart gives information about the proportion of city residents of four countries (Philippines, Malaysia, Thailand and Indonesia) in the years between 1970 and 2040.
Generally, the percentages of urban people in all four countries are increasing. Moreover, the most significant growths of city dwellers are shown by Malaysia and Indonesia.
Malaysia is one of the countries which showed a significant increase in the proportion of urban people with the starting point of 30% in the year of 1970. In the next 20 years it grew by 5-10% in each decade. Coming to 2000, it showed a dramatic increase in proportion of residents, who live in cities with the figure of 60%. Then the trend went up with a stable changes by 5-10% in each next decade with the percentage of 75% in the year of 2020. When it comes to the upcoming years, there is a prediction that more and more people will move to cities from rural areas. So the proportion of city population is expected to increase by 5% in each next decade. When it comes to Indonesia, which had a starting point of 12% in 1970 and became more and more urbanized with an increase by almost 10% in each decade. In 2020, the figure of city dwellers was about 50%. It is expected that till 2030 it will rise by 10% and by 5% till 2040.
In 1970 the percentages of population who lived in cities in Thailand and Philippines were about 18% and 32%, respectively. Both of these countries showed a rise of citizens by 5% till the next 10 years. In 1990, the figure for Philippines reached it’s peak with the figure of 48%, however it started decreasing till the year of 2010. Meanwhile, proportion of Thailand plataued trough this time of period. The percentage of thai people who lived in cities was about 30% and population of urban areas in Philippines was 45%. In the next 20years it is expected that the figures of both countries will increase by almost 10% in each decade.
