Overall, when compare from 1970 to 2040, the proportion of people in four counties living in cities increased over the years. The percentage of the population in the Philippines was the highest while the proportion of the citizens in Indonesia was the lowest in 1970. After 70 years, forecasts show that Malaysia will dramatically increase, followed by Indonesia.
The proportion of people in the Philippines live in cities decreased from 30% in 1970 to 45% in 2020, but it reached a peak at about 50% in 1990, highest in four countries. Likewise, the figure for population in Malaysia stood at 30% in 1970, then it dramatically rose to approximately 80% in 2020. In addition, the percentage of population in Indonesia and Thailand lives in cities stood at 15% and 20% in 1970, respectively After that, Indonesia sharply grew to 50% while Thailand steadily increased about 30% in 2020 but in 2000 the figure of people in both countries were the same (at 25%).
