Overall, the percentage of population in the urban areas is continuously increasing over the years. Especially in Malaysia, where population growth is the highest.
In 1970, philippines population in urban areas was approximately 30%, closely followed by Malaysia at around 29%. Thailand and Indonesia had low figures, at about 18% and 15% respectively. In the next decade, by 1980, Malaysia population percentage grew by 10% (50%), while in philippines the population remained nearly stable at 30%. In countries like Thailand and Indonesia there was a healthy growth of 2% from the previous decade. By 1990, the trend continued with Philippines urban population increased to nearly 49%, while in Malaysia it reched to 46%. The percentage of people living in Thailand and Indonesia was almost the same at 26% in 2000. By the year 2010 Malaysia urban population far exceeded the other countries to 66%, while Philippines and Indonesia both at 42% and Thailand at 27%.
In the year 2020, Malaysia’s population in cities soared to 72%, whereas Philipines saw a slight increase in percentage to 45%,while Thailand and Indonesia reported 44% and 37%, respectively. Projection for 2030 and 2040 suggest that Malaysia’s urban population could touch level of 80-90%, with Philippines reaching expected to rise to 48% in 2030 and 50% in 2040.Thailand and Indonesia are projected to attain figures of about 30% and 20%, respectively in 2030 and about 40% and 53% sequentially in 2040.
