Overall, all of the countries’ proportion of people living in urban areas increased and they are also expected to rise in the future. The most proportion will be in Malaysia in 2040, while the least will experience in Thailand.
In 1970, approximately 30% of people lived in cities in Philippines and Malaysia, while under 20% of people lived in urban areas in Thailand and Indonesia. In 1980, Malaysia reached to 40% and Philippines remained steadily. But after a decade, Philippines overtook Malaysia again, reaching their peak by approximately 47%. However, Malaysia then overtook all others, rising sharply to 60% in 2000 and they are predicted to rise 80% by 2040.
Indonesia also showed steady growth, increasing from about 13% in 1970 to 65% in 2040, with getting more result rather than Philippines and Thailand. By contrast, Philippines fell slightly from 1990 to 2010 accounting for 40%. After that, they rise gradually reaching to around 56% in 2040. Thailand grew more slowly than others, reaching only 50% by 2040.
