The line chart above illustrates the shares of different ways that people chose to purchase music from 2011 to 2018, namely streams, downloads, and buying CDs. Overall, the propotion music sold from streams had increased rapidly over the years, while the others had witnessed a significant decrease on sales by the middle of the time period.
The percentage of music sales on streams had risen significantly over 8 years. Particularly, in 2011, only around 5% of individuals chose to buy music from it. However, the following years witnessed a surge in the percentage before reaching more than 40% by 2018, making it the most preferred method of buying music in that year.
For the two other ways of purchasing music, particularly, for CDs, in 2011, it was the most prevalent way for people to buy music, with more than a half of the individuals chose to buy CDs rather than two remaining methods. However, the share witnessed a plunge in the following years, ultimately reaching only approximately 25% by 2018. The sales of music bought by downloading recorded a steady increase from 2011 to the mid-year of 2014 before gradually dropping its percentage down to 30% in 2018.
