Overall, the percentage of residents gradually increased in all four nations over the period and is expected to continue rising in the future, except the Philippines experienced a small decrease from 1990 to 2010. In the end of period, Malaysia will be the highest among all countries, while Thailand will be the lowest.
In 1970, around 30% of the population in both the Philippines and Malaysia lived in cities, compared with roughly 15% in Indonesia and slightly under 20% in Thailand. Malaysia was the only country that had significant growth and is projected to exceed 80% by 2040, which will locate in the first place.
The Philippines experienced a steady but lower rise, from 30% in 1970 to just above 50% by 2020 and it also had a slightly drop from 1990 to 2010. Thailand showed a more gradual trend. Its urban population grew from just over 10% in 1970 and remained the lowest among the four nations since 2020.
