The graph illustrates how many elephants lived in nine countries in 1997 and 2004.
Overall, the number of Asian elephants decreased in all countries except Cambodia. Also, the figures for India were always the highest in both years, while the opposite was true for China.
In 1997, while India had about 10000 elephants, whereas Myanmar and Thailand had only about half as many and around two-fifths as many as India, respectively. In contrast, there were similar numbers of elephants in Malaysia and Sri Lanka, with about 3000 each. Eight years afterwards, India, Malaysia and Thailand’s figures declined significantly by 2500 elephants. Meanwhile, the decline in Sri Lanka and Myanmar was much smaller, at roughly 500 elephants.
Regarding the remaining four countries, there was little difference between the figures, at roughly 1000 elephants each. In 2004, the number of elephants in Vietnam and Laos fell slightly by 100. Moreover, China’s figures witnessed a substantial decrease of 500 elephants, while Cambodia’s figures increased slightly to 1100 elephants.
