Overall, the population of Asian elephants in all but one of the nine countries witnessed a downward trend over the given period. It is also evident that the number of Asian elephants in India was the leading nation.
In terms of elephant population, India had by far the highest figures in both years, despite a significant decline from around 10000 in 1997 to approximately 7700 in 2004. The figure for Myanmar decreased from 5000 in 1997 to around 4500 in 2004, and Thailand exactly mirrored Myanmar’s declining trend, going down from 3900 to 1000 over the period shown. Notably, the population of Asian elephants in Malaysia decreased sharply from approximately 3000 in 1997 to 1000 in 2004. Initiating with the same level as Malaysia, the figure for Sri Lanka experienced a slight decline from about 3000 to 2900 over the given period.
With regard to the remaining countries, the elephant population in China and Vietnam were the lowest figures. The figure for China declined from around 900 to 300 over the survey period. This is followed by Vietnam and Laos decreased slightly from approximately 1000 in 1997 to 900 in 2004. In contrast, the population of Asian elephants in Cambodia increased gradually from about 1500 to 1700 over the given period.
