To begin, India stood at approximately 10000 in 1997 before the amount of the animals plunged to a low of less than 8000 in 2004. Malaysia elephants were at approximately 3000 in 1997 and significantly declined in 2004. Thailand followed a similar trend as 1997 was its peak year. Following this, it plummeted to less than 2000. China’s elephant count marginally decreased over the years. Furthermore, Vietnam and Sri Lanka also had slight dips.
In addition, Cambodia produced less elephants in 1997; subsequently, there was an incremental increase in 2004. Laos also saw a slight growth from 1997 to 2004.
