The line graph illustrates the rate of students learning five new languages (French, Spanish, Japanese, Chinese, German and other languages), in New Zealand primary school, over eight years, from 2006 to 2014.
Over the given period, French has always been by far the language with the highest learning rate. On the other hand, primary school students from New Zealand were least interested in learning Chinese as their second language, for most of the years.
The percentage of the French language fluctuated at approximately 30%, between 2006 and 2014. The Japanese rate decreased considerably by 11%, from about 28% to nearly 17%, over the eight-year period. While, the total count of students learning Spanish grew gradually and took the second place from Japanese at 23%, between 2009 and 2010.
The primary school students learning Chinese rose significantly to 15%, over the provided period. On the contrary, the percentage of children learning the German language fell steadily from near 15% to well below 10%, between 2006 and 2014. In the meanwhile the rate of students learning other languages as the second language varied from a low of 6% to a high of almost 14%, over the given period.
