The line chart illustrates the total export value of clothing from Bangladesh from 1998 to 2012, while the pie chart compares the import value of garments in different countries in 2012.
Overall, it is evident from the line chart that the export value of clothing from Bangladesh rose considerably, particularly from 2004 onwards. What also stands out from the chart is that the European Union was the main importer of garments, with its import value far exceeding the combined figures of the other four nations.
Looking first at the exported clothing value from Bangladesh between 1998 and 2012, this country started the period at around $ 2.5 billion, followed by a steady rise to $ 5 billion in 2004 before surging and ending the period at a peak of $ 20 billion.
Moving to the different imported destinations, the European Union was the dominant imported destination, at $ 11.38 billion, representing 60% of total. Despite being the second-largest market, the USA’s figure was much lower ( about one-third that of the European Union ), at $ 4.53 billion, which was equivalent to 24% of Bangladesh’s total export value. The remaining nations recorded relatively small export value, including Canada ( $ 0.87 billion ), Japan ( $ 0.4 billion ) and Turkey ( $ 0.36 billion ), and all of these countries also made up pretty small shares, none of them exceeding 8%.
