The line graph compares the number of people in terms of marriages in the UK over the period between 1951 and 2001. Overall, the number of remarriages saw an upward trend, whereas there was a fall in the figure for first marriages. It is also clear that the rate of all marriages decreased with fluctuating patterns.
In 1951, the number of people with the first marriages stood at about 350,000, which was significantly higher than roughly 150,000 remarried couples. By 1981, both figures had remained almost stable. As for all marriages, it stayed unchanged over the first decade with 400,000, then, it increased gradually to 450,000 in the 1971. After 30 years, there was a moderate drop in the number of all marriages, decreasing to approximately 370,000.
By contrast, the figures for remarriages and first marriages went in the opposite direction. The number of first marriages experienced a considerable fall from 350,000 in 1981 to 250,000 in 2001 , while the upward trend was true for remarriages, rising from 150,000 in 1981 to 250,000 in the final year.
