Overall, rugby experienced a dramatic decline in the number of participants, while there was an increasing trend in tennis. However, basketball and badminton remained constant, with a slight decline at the beginning of the period.
In 1990, an impressive 250,000 people participated in rugby, making it the most popular sport activity among individuals. This figure, however, decreased constantly, reaching a low of only 50,000 partakers by 2005. In contrast, the number of people engaging in tennis rose noticeably, surpassing rugby by 1995, and making it the most popular sport activity in 2005, with 220,000 participants.
When it comes to remaining sport activists, basketball and badminton were close, at 70,000 and 50,000, respectively. Although the number of participants in both figures fell in the following five years, they bounced back and remained constant until the end of the period.
