The line graphs illustrate transformations in the steel industry in the UK of demand and employment between 1970 and 2000.
Overall, total demand of steel industry decreased, followed by the number of steel’s production along three decades. It begins around 18 million tonnes of steel on demand and 16 millions tones of production. The demand reaching its peak until 20 million tonnes in the middle of 1970. In the following year, it started to decrease gradually and there was fluctuating demand and production. In 2000, the demand for steel reach approximately 12 million tonnes. In addition, imports of steel in the UK tend to increase about 7 times with only just under 1 million tonnes in the beginning of 1970.
However, the line graph of employment in the UK steel industry show a decreasing number on this period. In 1970, It started with around 200,000 of people working in this industry. After that, workers were decrease moderatelly until 1980. The next after this year, there were the decreasing of number in the workers rapidly among this period of time. In 2000, the number of workers decrease until 70% with only around 20,000 people were working in the steel industry.
