Overall, it is clear that South Africa was the leading importer of oranges, Turkey imported the largest quantity of grapefruit while the majority of lemons and other citrus fruits were exported to Mexico. Notably, oranges were the most purchased commodity among the four categories.
Looking at the charts in detail, in 2012, South Africa took the lead in orange imports, at 1,000 thousand tonnes, double the figure for Egypt, at 500 thousand tonnes. The quantity of oranges exported to the US was around 400 thousand tonnes, which was slightly less than that to Egypt. Regarding lemons, about 500 thousand tonnes of this fruit were imported by Mexico, followed by 200 thousand tonnes by the US and 100 thousand tonnes by Argentina.
As for grapefruits, Turkey registered the largest quantity at 400 thousand tonnes imports, while 300 thousand tonnes were exported to Mexico. In contrast, the US imported the least quantity of grapefruit, only 200 thousand tonnes in 2012. Notably, unlike Egypt and the US with only 20 thousand tonnes of other citrus fruit imports, Mexico purchased up to 500 thousand tonnes of them from overseas.
