The line graph illustrates the number of international students from four different countries applying to universities in Australia between 2005 and 2020.
Overall, while country Y had the highest number of applicants at the beginning, it witnessed a steady decline over the period. On the other hand, despite starting with the lower levels, the student populations from the other three countries registered Australian educational institutions, gradually surpassing and widening the gap with country Y.
In 2005, country Y started with around 18 thousands students joining Australian universities, followed by X which began at nearly 15 thousands. While having some fluctuations in 12 years, country Y experienced a notable drop in 2017, with only 13 thousand enrolments to academic institutions in Australia and recorded the lowest figure at the end of the period. In contrast, the student intake from X increased sharply and peaked in the final year, ending at over 37 thousand.
Turning to the two remaining countries, the figure for W initiated at about two thousand students and less than country Z about three thousand, it saw a remarkable growth and overtook the volume of Z’s applications in 2014, before reaching over 20 thousand and securing the second place. Country W, after observing slight variations, its number of students enrolling in Australian universities climbed rapidly and exceeded country Y in the middle of 2019, finishing at around 18 thousand in 2020.
