In 1989, about 30 million trips were made for holidays. This number increased to 36 million in 1992 and 43 million in 1995. It then reached 50 million in 1998, but fell to around 40 million in 2001. Business trips were much lower, at about 8 million in 1989. They rose to 10 million in 1995 and then decreased to 8 million in 2001.
Trips for family visits were about 5 million in 1989 and 1992. They increased to around 8 million in 1995 and 9 million in 1998, reaching about 12 million in 2001. Other purposes showed a different trend, rising from 4 million to 7 million between 1989 and 1995, before falling to only 2 million in 2001.
