Overall, the number of smoking men was constantly greater than that of women throughout all the surveyed years. The gap was the greatest in 1960, it had dropped significantly by 1975 and reached its lowest value in the last year.
The figure for males witnessed a steady decrease, while for females it initially rose until 1975, when it reached its peak, and latter it dropped.
In detail, men smokers originally totaled 600 thousands and their number was decreasing by 25 thousands per five years until 1980. After that, the growth rate became even more negative in the next decades and their figures reached a bottom low of around 250 thousands in 2000.
Regarding the women smokers, they numbered approximately 50 thousands in 1960 and their number rose to 350 thousands in 1975. Later, their figure dropped at a constant rate and it eventually ended to around 150 thousands in the last year.
