The line graph illustrates the change of consumption of spreads in three different categories over 26-year period. The figures were collected every five years from 1981 to 2007.
Overall, butter and margarine show downward trends, although the extents of which are different. In contrast, low fat & reduced spreads tend upwards in the period described.
The figure for butter shows a slight increase in the first five years from 1981 to 1986, after which it experienced a significant decrease and hit a low of roughly 50g. On the other hand, that for margarine remained relatively stable at between 80g and 100g over 20 years from 1981 to 2001, before dropping to just 40% in the final year, 2007.
One conspicious point is that the figure for the last category, low fat & reduced spreads, was recorded first time in 1996 at around 10g. In the next five years, the amount of this category reached a pick of just over 80g and fell to around 70g in 2007.
