The line graph illustrates data on the types of crimes that were committed in England and Wales, starting from 1970 to 2005
Overall, the commitment of all three types of crimes increased over the period, with car theft showing the largest rise. Notably, house burgling and car theft went up sharply over the timeframe, whereas street robbery experienced a negligible growth.
Starting with substantial upward trends, car thieves and house burglars experienced different patterns of fluctuation. Car thieves rose noticeably, starting with 400 thousand offenders in 1970, reaching to sharp one million. After that period, the number of those criminals skyrocketed swiftly before declining dramatically to less than a million in 2005. On the other hand, the same case can be seen in house burglary, albeit to smaller numbers. Starting with 200 thousand perpetrators in the initial year, rising to its peak at 800 thousand offenders. In spite of considerable growth, the trend showed a downturn to less than 600 thousand offenders in the final year.
The number of crimes in street robbery remained stable throughout the period, except few changes. In 1970, street robbers were approximately 100 thousand, less than twice that of house burglars. Although it experienced volatility, the number of occurrences for this crime rose slightly to 200 thousand in the final year.
