The maps illustrate the transformation of classes in elementary schools in four states in Australia from 2010 to the present.
Overall, it is clear that the location of tables and chairs has been changed to be more concentrated. In addition, the teachers room and and a play area have been removed, making the class more spacious.
In 2010, three table and chairs area were arranged in a row in the middle of the room, while three play areas were located in three corners: the northeast, northwest, and southwest corners. The teacher’s room was located between the two play areas on the left side, whereas other facilities such as art area, children sink, adult sink and white board occupied the opposite side. Additionally, there were extra stuffs located in corners of the class and two windows installed to the north and the west of the room.
Nowadays, the seating areas have been placed closer together, in a cluster in the southwest, replacing the position of a play area in this corner and the teachers room. Meanwhile, the two remained play areas as well as four additional facilities in the right side stay unchanged. Two bigger shelves are also added next to the western window, which is convenient for students to storage their items.
