On the presented maps there is seen a transformation of the city of Nelson from an average location in 2000 into a modern urban entity nowadays.
The main change was in creating the car-free environment/space, probably, to reduce carbon emissions. For this purpose, the road near the city centre was repurposed into a pedestrian zone. Bike rental scheme was introduced as well in the downtown. There was also launched a tramline from the centre to the university. New train station on the left side of the tramline also contributed to the augmentation of the transport capacity. The old building of the station was demolished.
Another dimension of the city’s transition was an increase of available housing through erection of a hall of residence on the left from the university. A probable surge in the number of population has caused a demand in facilities from catering and trade industries. To satisfy these demands there was built a new shopping centre on the north-east of the city, on the place of a forest. The old market on the left from the centre was replaced by a new shop while new covered market was established on the right side.
The port area accommodated a new restaurant as well as bars and clubs.
The change of the city of Nelson was impressive.
