The plans illustrate the transformations of the city of Nelson between 2000 and the present day, highlighting significant changes to its layout and infrastructure.
Overall, it is evident that the city of Nelson underwent significant development, characterized by the construction of new facilities such as a hall of residence, a shopping centre, and entertainment venues, as well as the strategic relocation and modernization of key infrastructure, like the market and the city centre. Despite these changes, it is noteworthy that no existing infrastructure was removed during this transformation.
In 2000, the city centre of Nelson was surrounded by a train station, an old market to the west, and a few isolated buildings such as a university. However, by the present day, the old market has been replaced with a new covered market on the eastern side of the city centre, while a modern bike rental scheme has also been introduced within the centre to promote eco-friendly travel. To the north of the city centre, a hall of residence has been constructed next to the existing university, and a new train line has been built to connect these educational facilities directly.
In the south of the city, near the waterfront, significant entertainment infrastructure has been developed. The area, which used to include a port, is now pedestrianised and features new restaurants, bars, and clubs. Additionally, the north-east section of the city, once filled with greenery and trees, has been cleared to make space for a large shopping complex. Meanwhile, a new shop has been built in the south-west corner, further reflecting the city’s commercial expansion.
