The maps depict the evolution of Nelson city from 2000 to the present year. There have been notable transformations over the years, with trees being cleared and new facilities being established. Despite these changes, the university and city center remain prominent landmarks.
In 2000, the university was situated north of the city center, adjacent to a cluster of trees. To the left of the trees, there was an old market, positioned below the train station. Additionally, a port was located along the main road.
In recent years, significant developments have occurred. A hall of residence has been erected to the left of the university, replacing the previous tree-lined area. A new shopping center now stands in place of the former trees. Furthermore, the train line has been extended to connect the university directly to the city center. A new train station has been constructed in front of the university, replacing the previous one. Additionally, a bicycle scheme has been implemented around the city center. The main road has been converted into a pedestrian-friendly thoroughfare, with restaurants and bars/clubs sprouting up on the opposite side. The old market has been replaced by a new shop on the left side of the city center, while a new covered market has been built on the right side.
