The illustrations present the structural transformations that occurred in the park layout from 1980 to 2020.
Overall, it is clear that during this time period, the area underwent massive commercialization, which made its green spaces noticeably smaller to accommodate new commercial amenities, such as a gift shop. Moreover, the hotel building itself got bigger as extra structures were added to its layout by 2020.
To start with the 1980 layout, the diagram shows that the hotel was initially surrounded by a vast open green space, primarily consisting of Kilmarve Forest. Directly alongside this area ran a narrow stream known as the Caoimhe River, which was situated adjacent to Waterdale Farm. Additionally, a designated bird sanctuary occupied the northern section of the map.
Turning to the 2020 layout, the introduction of a new road infrastructure is highly apparent. This development paved the way for the construction of a visitor center and a gift shop, as well as what appear to be housing units. These new amenities were built directly over parts of Kilmarve Forest, significantly reducing the available green environment. Conversely, the bird sanctuary at the top of the map was expanded and became noticeably larger than it was in 1980. Ultimately, in comparison to the traditional, rural landscape of 1980, the 2020 layout closely resembles an urbanized environment where the natural forest has been restricted to accommodate modern developments.
