The two given maps illustrate the transformations that took place in a coastal area named Pentland over a period of nearly three decades from 1980 to 2007.
What is most striking when looking at the maps is that the waterfront area witnessed substantial modifications, most noticeably with the appearance of recreational and residential amenities, as well as the disappearance of industrial areas and green space.
Getting into details, on the northern side, a sea was renovated into a yacht marina, accommodating the demand of residents and the roads were extended along the coast, making it more accessible and convenient. Furthermore, the park was built in a place that used to be vacant land in 1980 near the left side of the sea, and more apartments were erected on the other side. It is noticeable that the industrial area which was situated in the western side was demolished to make room for a multi-storey parking lot, yet this site was reduced in size. Additionally, a new swimming pool was built beside the car park.
Regarding the central part, many shops were added, stretching along the intersection of the roads. Another point to note is that the site occupied by a grassland experienced a significant change, giving rise to numerous houses in 2007. Lastly, a new cinema was constructed opposite the roads.
