The maps depict the development and transformation of a Nelson’s city centre between 2000 and now.
Overall, the area has undergone extensive redevelopment, with the addition of numerous commercial, residential, and recreational facilities. While certain landmarks such as the university and port have remained in their original locations, the city has made many significant improvements to its transportation infrastructure.
Beginning with the northern section and transportation changes, the train station has been relocated from its original position in the west to a more central location. In the northwestern area, a hall of residence has been constructed on the west side of the university, which itself remains unchanged. To the northeast, the trees that once stood have been removed to make way for a new shopping centre. Additionally, a pedestrian crossing has been established, connecting the university to the city centre area.
Turning to the city centre and southern areas, the open space previously labeled “City Centre” has been developed into a bike rental scheme. In the southwestern section, the old market has been demolished, and in its place, a new shop and a new covered market have been built on the west side and east side of the the bike rental area respectively. The road at the bottom of the map, which once accommodated vehicular traffic, has been converted into a pedestrian-only zone. Along this pedestrianized area, new establishments have emerged: a restaurant has opened to the southwest near the port, and bars and clubs have been established to the southeast. Finally, the port itself continues to operate in its original southern location.
