The bar chart compares the percentages of people employed on a part-time basis in the four countries of the United Kingdom in 1980 and 2010.
Overall, part-time employment was more common in England and Wales than in Northern Ireland and Scotland in both years. The proportion of part-time workers increased in England, Scotland and Wales over the period, whereas Northern Ireland was the only country to experience a slight decline. Wales recorded the highest percentage in both 1980 and 2010.
In 1980, around 25% of workers in England were employed part-time, and this figure rose to approximately 31% by 2010. Wales had the highest proportion, increasing modestly from just over 30% to about 35% during the same period.
By contrast, Northern Ireland saw a small fall in the percentage of part-time workers, from roughly 15% in 1980 to around 13% in 2010. Scotland, however, experienced the most significant growth, with the figure almost doubling from about 11% to nearly 20% over the 30-year period.
